Hedgie, Hedgie, What Do You See?

I'm realizing that posting frequently is getting harder, probably because I actually have real school and stuff now (scoff). But before I head out on my adventures this weekend, I figured I'd throw another post in here so that the next one isn't kilometers long (see what I did there? I'm practically a native.)

This week has been fairly routine, although the fact that my routine includes living in New Zealand is pretty freaking cool. I had to stay home from classes on Monday because my cold/virus took over, and Tuesday I spent more time blowing my nose than taking notes, but I'm pleased to say that I'm feeling much better now, and escaped the sickness with just a hint of Rudolph Nose Syndrome. I'm hoping that I don't get sick again while I'm here though, because I really felt like I was wasting my precious time!

Sam was nice enough to spend the evenings with me since I wasn't much up for adventuring, so we took on the task of watching all three of the Matrix movies. After paying extremely close attention, pausing them to discuss, and googling some of the themes, we still only half understand what the heck was going on. But they passed the time nicely, and now I can say that I've seen them! After watching the second one last night, we decided to break and go outside to try and find some hedgehogs. Sasha, our local animal whisperer, had had several encounters in the nights past, so we decided to try and find them. And within minutes we found a little guy right in the bushes outside our buildings! He was sooooo cute. I picked him up and we hung out for awhile, but then I could tell he was getting scared because he started to curl up around my fingers. So I put the widdle baby back in the bushes and have left him be since. But now I always keep my eyes peeled for more hedgie friends as I walk by!

I was just a wee bit excited.

Today was generally uneventful but very productive: I bought a sleeping bag and a foam mat on super duper clearance at a camping outlet store! I am incredibly pleased with the deal I got, because things are EXPENSIVE here (in case you hadn't noticed). And they will come in handy because....wait for it....I will be sleeping in a tent for the first time in my life this weekend! That's right folks, I have never slept in a tent. Tomorrow we're heading out to the west coast for the Wild Foods Festival and will be camping out for two days! It should be a grand old time. Hopefully I won't die.

Fun Facts/Updates:

-A hedgehog can travel up to 3 kilometers in one night.

-I don't think I've mentioned this one before: Going barefoot is a thing here. But not just outside--people go to class and grocery shopping and stuff without shoes on. On some level this is sweet, but it also sort of grosses me out.

-Today was the first day I did any creative writing while here, and it was AWESOME. It was so therapeutic, and I felt so relaxed afterwards! Definitely a sign that I should be doing more of it. My "642 Things to Write About" book will certainly come in handy for that.

-Half of my flatmates are slobs. Since we each have our own rooms, this isn't a problem most of the time, but I cannot even describe to you the squalor that is my kitchen sometimes. They leave dishes (with food still in them!) in the sink for up to a week, food scraps on the floor/counters, pile up the trash....it's so disgusting. The three of us that are neat freaks end up losing it and cleaning, but we're planning to have a flat meeting soon to try and fix this problem! Just one of the many joys of living with other people. I will be so thankful for a dishwasher next year!

-There is an 85% chance I will eat a cricket this weekend. What is the world coming to?

Until next time, champs: Cheers!
